During the futile search for survivors of the Hurricane Creek Mine disaster of 1970 I was twelve years old and had to promise my mother that under no circumstances ever, would I become a coal miner in those deep, dark mines.

The disaster happened on a Wednesday and that evening the preacher changed his sermon to the Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man.

All day long the next day on New Year’s Eve there was nothing on television except scenes of impoverished miner’s families gathering at churches to mourn.

In a few months Tom T. Hall took a trip to Hyden.

Every Tom T. Hall song was a masterpiece of irony, traditional old time Christianity, the search for justice, and the truth.

This may be his best, although who can fairly rank them?

Trip to Hyden
