I have never seen what appears to either be a black anodized stinger, or possibly vulcanite. I think Weber is a brand that is pretty specific with stinger identification. Any Weberers’ out there care to chime in?

That’s what I thought, but a very stiff nylon brush revealed nothing shiny. It did reveal a more hexagonal ball at the end.

Pretty sure I have a pipe around here that looks very similar. Could be bone as well (going by memory on that).

I just saw another Weber for sale on eBay. It also has that same stinger. I would guess they used some type of plastic for a short period, as I couldn't see any reference to them anywhere. I would suspect that it is resin/plastic/bakelite.

I'm not big on stingers, with only one Kaywoodie Drinkless with a metal stinger that also is the screw-on for the stem. I'd avoid plastic stingers, even more so old deteriorating plastic, which probably shed particles and/or gases, and what are called monomers, small molecules that aren't good to inhale.

I have plenty of webers and have not seen the stinger on them. But I have seen one on like that on a WWII era yello bole. It was made of bone. I bet yours is as well. Is there a marking on the stem that says weber or just a W?

I’ll have to take a look. It’s pretty oxidized.

Nothing on the stem. It was definitely plastic. Attached a photo where you could see the seem. Went in the pill box.

I don’t know if there are any pipe makers in Ukraine, but if there are they aren’t getting any aluminum right this minute.

In 1941, before Pearl Harbor, the United States auto industry switched back to steel pistons to save aluminum for defense.

After Pearl Harbor the makers of Lucky Strikes changed their green package with a red bullseye to what we are used to now, in order to save copper used for the green dye. As for autos, the USA produced almost five million civilian cars a year before the war and less than a couple of dozen in 1944.

What I’ve wondered about, is that how did Kaywoodie make Drinkless pipes during the war, at all? They did shrink the ball on the stinger, but you see wartime advertisements for Kaywoodies with an integral stinger. Were they made of steel alloy?

My guess is that old Weber was new when Spitfires and Messerschmitts were battling over the tower of Big Ben.

I agree early weber pipes did not have a W or Weber in an oval as later pipes had. I remember the bone stinger on my yello bole, one of the "Honey Cured Briar" so early 1930's production, I tapped it with a fingernail and it was solid and made me think ceramic. I was not hard enough.
