Yesterday was the day with the shortest daylight and longest darkness of the year. From here, the daylight gets longer and the darkness shorter. We have all of winter ahead of us, whether that means the fun of snowmen, skiing, skating, and snowscapes, or the misery of blizzards, ice storms, shoveling, and head colds. Either way, I always like more daylight. I'm tired of feeling like it's ten p.m. at six in the evening, having to cease raking leaves because I can barely see them in the dark, and night driving as often as in daylight. I don't have a case of Seasonal Affective Disorder, but I do tend to feel more down in the winter and take walks in the sunlight to perk up. The inclination to nap descends upon me more often. So, here's to sunlight and brighter longer days on the way, for courage to bluster through the challenges of winter, and enjoy the arrival of the New Year. I do enjoy the occasional heavy winter meal. You just don't feel like packing it away (food) in the summer the way you do when you come in from the cold, after burning some calories.

Bring on the light. The days only get brighter from here. While the nights are long it does feel good to warm up by the fire and enjoy a cup of cocoa. It is a good time to rest or read, especially when the snow starts falling.

I'm on the opposite side: I prefer short days and loathe long ones. Don't care for it being quite bright at 4 A.M.
I love it when the sun sets before 5 P.M. and doesn't rear its ugly spherical head till it's about 9 A.M. Always felt great about going out to school or work when it's dark, and more darkness earlier in the day helps my computer use immensely.

olkofri, you live in the right place! You are superbly adapted to your environment. Great!

So, is everyone noticing the longer daylight now? Just kidding. A few weeks, and at least we will notice we aren't looking at the sunset before we leave work. That's a good start. Just watch out for the icy patches, etc. etc.

Kinda. Seems too early to tell any difference, but it's amazing how the celestial bodies work, especially when you have to factor them into your photography. Had to take a cityscape photo to-night, and –surprisingly– I was glad for those extra minutes of twilight, as it allowed for the blowing snow to settle; just 45 minutes prior I couldn't see the hill from the city (or viceversa). Goes to show how sometimes something you dislike can be a life saver.
(And, oh yeah, was the hill every icy! Again, thank God for the extra light: recovering from surgery I can't afford to slip and fall.)

olkofri, you are really attuned to daylight through the photography. Take care on the ice. Not having much of a winter here, people really get ambushed by small or unexpected patches. It doesn't take much.
