An early retort it seems. Harder to do with water but still interesting.
Looks like a crack pipe and a home made hose bong repackaged in an old box to me
my first thoughts too. That's one hole away from being a crack pipe (which where originally made to vape other less terrible stuff).
I've occasionally used the steam wand from my espresso machine, and it does remove a bit after a hot water flush. But by a bit I mean peanuts! Almost nada!

Oh, and I have run it down the chamber and out the stem. I suppose with a grommet, or a connection hose, it could add some real force. Gotta try it!

I have been tempted to use the steam cleaner for jewelry on my pipes, but the idea of high pressure steam instead of just rinsing out in the sink might push poor old Saltedplug over the edge.
Looks almost exactly like the retort I bought for the occasional boiling alcohol pipe flush. Just a tea total option.
I use a tea tree suppository flush followed by a lavender douche. The later relaxes the briar to enhance the “rest” . ?
Light to heat up water? Don't they mean Bunsen burner and alcohol? ?
