It would be helpful if experienced pipe smokers could comment on the flavor profiles of the main tobacco types. My impressions:

Latakia: smokey, campfire

Virginia: grassy, hay, subtle sweetness, sometimes more earthy (distinguish red and dark?) sometimes sour

Burley: Nutty, can be cigaretty

Perique: spicy, also smokey?

Orientals: incense, spicy, sour

Cavendish - is there a separate flavor profile or does it just take on flavor of toppings and smooth a blend out??

Kentucky Dark Fired: ?

Unflavored black Cavendish tastes sweet to me, but since it can be made from either Virgnia or burley (and maybe others?) that may vary with the source. Cavendish is a process not a variety of tobacco. It also adds volume to the smoke, although that isn't a flavor, but it may affect the flavor of the blends. I find burley more than nutty, and not often that cigarette-like, but I will have to think about it to come up with a broader profile.
