Hi. I just found this unusual meerschaum antique pipe. It is a John Middleton meerschaum with lampskin. Anyone ever seen one before?

Animal hide and finished leather covered pipes were somewhat popular in the 60's and 70's, all of the ones I've seen have been briar though, so yours might be rarer. They still have a small but loyal following of collectors who try to get examples of each hide.

The lambskin-covered meerschaum had a few vogues, the first in the late 1800s I think. It was thought to aid in coloring. A quote from an old book, put by Ben Rapaport in one of his books, says it actually inhibits good coloring. I don't think it affects smoking. Would love to see a photo.
