I am going to post a few posts of underrated musicians. Feel free to join in.
This first post is devoted to BOZ SCAGGS.
This dude is such a freaking BAD ASS.
I could sit and listen to his music for hours.
Of course there's this song, which is AMAZING:

But there is so much more than the few hits. I mean he had the best studio musicians at his disposal. Then, there is an entire album of incredible bad assery:

The key to how amazing this guy is the ENGINEERING. I think there are like 75 people who are responsible for the engineering of one of his albums.
He practically had to have an entire year just to engineer his albums. Check it out.

Warren Haynes with Joe Bonamassa -- Guitar Cente…: http://youtu.be/KX14smq21HE
Joe bonamassa is by far my favourite guitarist since I discovered him. He's not underrated by people who know about him.

If you have 11 minutes and like blues, its an awesome video.
Not sure how to embed, sorry.

I read some where the Boz Scaggs and Steve Miller were high school classmates.
And Knopfler is my guitar hero. Fingers only; no picks. Same with Lindsay Buckingham.

Knopfler , Haynes and Bonamassa are all three at the top of my list of all time greats!

As well a Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Tommy Emanuel, Billy Gibbons, The Nuge, Allan Collins, Gary Rossington, Angus Young, Jimmi Hendrix, Zakk Wylde, Robert Randolph, Robert Johnson, Brad Paisley, Robert Cray, Mr. D. Alman, David Gilmour, Carlos Santana, John Bonham, John Mayer (with his blues trio), Lon Eldridge, B. B. King, and many more!
Also, if you've never heard of Jake Shimabakuro, you should really check him out. He plays a tenor Ukulele..... Like you've never seen one played before!
Some of these May not exactly be "under rated", but that's my list!

I've seen Jake Shimabakuro in live performance twice. He's impressive in giving that small instrument

a wide-ranging voice. He uses the Hawaiian pronunciation, so it is not You, but Oooo kulele.
I like Ernie Hawkins the student of the late Rev. Gary Davis on blues guitar.

The most underrated musicians are the ones nobody has ever heard of. I've seen some greatly talented artists in small bars before.

As for the more recognizable underrated musicians, one of my picks would be

Frank Zappa and the mothers of invention.

He had over 60 people in his bad and all of them were amazing.

Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists ever. Except for a song's signature lick, never plays the same thing twice - dude's just singing up there. A famous example of never playing the same lick twice is Sultans of Swing, but my favorite song is Brothers in Arms. Touch.
I think everyone recognizes him as one of the all-time best though, I don't think he's underrated :)
One I think is underrated is the drummer for Lamb; nothing but tasty, complex rhythms that complement and don't overpower the song (looking at you, Neil Peart).

Based on the thread premise, I think I'll throw these out there. Steve Walsh, lead singer and keyboardist for Kansas (now retired) put out two solo albums in the last decade or so that, imo, are two of the best rock albums no one ever heard...Glossalalia and Shadow Man.
Here are selections from each:
Note: the sound is not good enough from these videos to really appreciate the musicianship going on here...he had some really good players on these albums...especially on Glossalalia.

I guess you guys never heard of Roy Buchanan. I had the immense pleasure of having been in the audience at a theater in Boston one night when his Messiah album was being promoted on WBCN.

I've seen Clapton, Alvin Lee, Jeff Beck, BB King, Carlos, Leslie West, and so many more...but this one night's performance by Buchanan put me into guitar heaven.

Similarly to Hendrix,Buchanan's "peers" were in awe. He used no effects other than the tone and volume dials on his guitar, no pick, no tremolo bar, and used a 1954 Telecaster.

When you say underrated guitarists, his name is usually at the top of the list.

That night, Roy played about 3 encores after about an hour and a half of sensational concert, and those encores were every bit as good or better than anything he'd already done. My smile lasted for weeks afterward.

Probably because of her drug history, Beth Hart is definitely underrated as a blues singer & keyboardist. I have travelled to see her and would again especially in a small venue. And especially with Joe Bonamassa!

"I watched that whole concert on YouTube. That girl can sing the blues!"
I'm over 6 ft tall, 250# & strong as an Ox, but she can bring out tears & emotions I never knew I had just with her singing the blues! Few others have ever done that to me.

I've been listening to Boz Scaggs since the very early 70's and have seen him LIVE at least a half dozen times.
I'll add Jerry Cantrell to the under-rated ranks.
