I read recently here that some pipe restorers spin a pipe-cleaner loaded with Tripoli in the pipes that they are restoring presumably to buff out any scratches that come with regular cleaning of pipes.

Would there be any positive or negative affect of you did this in the draft hole of the stummel?

Same questions from another angle - do artisan pipe makers rely on only their sharp drill bits to create a smooth draft hole?

Looking forward to this discussion!

Thanks in advance

An interesting question.

I usually polish the airway in my stem restores to remove any roughness from the initial drilling. Helps to reduce the small amount of condensate that can build up due to rough edges. At least that’s my theory.

And it allows cleaners to pass a lot easier.

In my experience draft holes in the stummel are usually a little larger.

When I get an estate that’s new to me, I usually saturate a larger cleaner with alcohol, shove it in the airway and let it sit overnight to draw out all the tars.

Never considered polishing it. I don’t know if there would any benefit or not.
