If you watched previous seasons of “The Crown” on Netflix, you might have noticed Tommy Lascelles, who served as Private Secretary to several monarchs. In his diaries, he mentions this tobacco storage tip.
Never tried it myself but I’ve heard it works. I’ve also heard of using orange peels. Seems like you’d have to remember to change out the potato slices, lest they go rotten.

Back in my weed smoking days we’d often add a baby carrot to the jar to keep it from drying out. Only one time did I ever get any mold, everything was covered in a fine silver powdery mold. Just brushed it off and smoked it anyway.

We used potato or apple slices in otc pouches waaaay back in the day. You had to watch that you didn't over hydrate your tobacco. Nowadays I prefer much dryer tobacco.
