I work at a radio station and while one of the news anchors was reading their newscast and I heard the word "tobacco" get used which caught my ear and when I rolled back the audio and listened, Turns out tobacco might be useful as an ingredient to develop a drug that will help cancer patients post-chemo. This is still in the research phase but all the same, it's a need idea that tobacco might get some positive publicity for once.

fun fact it has been used in similar ways pre cigarettes. Chewing snus also helps people recover from certain types of heart attacks too.

I hope you're right but I think it has more to do with the heartiness of the plant in lab conditions. Its easier to graft and develop other plants and modifications too ... (clearly my meager description shows a lack of science education) ...
