The wife and I have decided that it's time to look for a vacation property down south where it's much warmer than up here in the frozen north. One place we are seriously considering is the South Carolina coast, preferably somewhere within a half hour's drive or so from the Myrtle Beach airport. I have heard SC is quite tobacco friendly, and that certainly holds some appeal for me, particularly since I anticipate I will be spending much more time at the place down south when I retire in 10 years or so. Can anyone recommend any communities in this area that are nice and friendly places? Our plan is to go down there in a couple of months and meet with a real estate agent.
Admittedly, being close to the smokingpipes.com B&M store holds some appeal as well. Has anyone been there?

Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach are not nearly as smoker friendly as they were a couple of years ago. But you can still smoke in the bars. Though some bars don't like pipes and cigars. Stupid, I know.
Little River, on the other hand, is still pretty friendly. There's even a few restaurants here where you can smoke. And you should definitely visit the shop!

Peck, Sarasota Florida is very smoker friendly. I smoke everywhere outside, and all the bars you can smoke in. The weather is great, over 300 sunny days a year and tons of great golf courses. You should check out my development, close to the malls, close to the best beach in America and we can hang out. http://islesofsarasota.com/

I have been to Hilton Head island before and it is a nice area. There is also a good pipe shop James island Piper. The owners name is Don and he gives a discount if you ate a member of NASPC.
I live in FL like Harris. I know we have no state income tax but I do not know about SC. Some good property values are available in FL.
www.realtor.com. Should give you lots of information. You can then research the property tax websites by county to see what the taxes are like for the homes you might like.
The pipe shop is not on Hilton Head island. That was not clear in my original sentence.

SC isn't as tax friendly as FL, but if your main res. is up north & new condo is a vacation spot, unless you change main residency to "no state income tax) FL????

I would also concider insurance & propert taxes & bet SC is less.

Well, I have two little kids, so hard for me to complain about that. As for titty bars, I have been known to indulge on occasion . . .
Harris, didn't know you were in Sarasota. One of my partners has a place there on the waterfront, so he has been trying to convince me to look for a place around there.

I've been to most places along the east coast, It can still get cold in SC I'd say push further down to Florida if your looking for a real winter retreat. Charleston is a great city though lots of history and good fishing. Good luck to you sir.

I have been searching the real estate listings in sarasota. Can't believe how cheap it seems. Has Sarasota been badly hammered in the real estate crash?

Most of FL has, but a great time to buy now. Assuming other costs are concidered. Condos all over the country took a hit I believe.

Sarasota and all of Florida was hit real hard and the values are slowly climbing up right now, but there are still plenty of great deals. Property taxes have come way down as the values plummeted, insurance however is not inexpensive.
Peck, my buddy Patrick knows the area very well and he got me a great deal on my place.
