I’ll be doing absolutely no topping or modifications of any sort to this guy, except hoping to find an undamaged threaded bone chimney for it🤞🏻IMG_5446.jpeg

I approach such damage a bit differently - the original pipe is already gone in my opinion, so no real “restoration” is possible any more. You could still get a really nice looking and smokable pipe out of it, but I would take out all completely charred material, that’s carbon and not wood anymore and start from there seeing what should be done. Blackened wood is “ok” as long as it’s still wood and not coal.
