My elderly mother in law made a interstate call to well known hotel chain for reservations. She was placed on hold and another person came on the line and asked for advance payment. On checking the credit card bill at a later date, they were charged twice for the same amount. This was resolved by the credit card co. Several months later they were contacted by State of Maine based group that owns several chain franchises. They advised that she had signed up for a time share and would be billed if not used. The ruse was to lure them to sign a time share document. BEWARE this maybe a federal violation of inter state RICO act.

Thanks for the notice @Pipeoff. I’m sure your family will be able to avoid charges of these kind as folks are now hip to da scam.
And, @Old_Newby, “Our baby boomer generation saved the world from tyranny”…I think you’re referring to the Greatest Generation.
And, as far as saving the world from tyranny…?.
I’m also not political…I’m an optimistic cynic (otherwise known as smart ass). ?☕

Being an old fogey, we still maintain a landline, and all we get are scam calls, literally, bandits out to fleece the pubic -- nonsense insurance policies, car warranties without substance, false contest winnings, outfits wangling for our financial information, dubious charities, and some fools actually attempt to intimidate whoever answers. So I always answer in the voice of doom and hang up if the robot doesn't speak immediately. Why the big phone carrier accommodates this, even as a revenue stream, bewilders me. They undermine themselves. They cannot possibly sell me other services while this remains the situation. They have consigned themselves to the slums of communications. Slumlords is all they are now.

The US has caved to crime. Our baby boomer generation who saved the world from tyranny are now being scammed. I will try not to get political cause it’s against the rules…. But you know!!
dude this country has had some great crime issues since well forever. We do have wider reporting on it now if that's a comfort.

Might you share where- approximately- that front door is, please?

How:
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. province, etc.

I don't know why people bother to answer a phone number you don't recognize.
Heck even without call display I just won't answer the phone if I wasn't expecting a call.
If something is really urgent they can drive to my front door.
I don't either, but parents... phhhht... just try to make them follow orders.

"All of the people some of the time and some of the people ..." And, lonely, old folk are easy targets. Many are scammed on donating savings to the "poor", veterans, orphans, cancer research, buy a an unnecessary warranty, etc. . . . Lotta oi gullible people, particularly the lonely aged, Lotta of greedy predators out their also. Protect the vulnerable as best you can!

House flipping is another blight of business. Every Joe has taken a workshop on how to become a millionaire buying properties and giving them a makeover and selling them for a lot more. I haven't yet got a solicitation to buy my house written in crayon, but some of these people have come pretty close to that. Most of these folks should not include their photo.

Whenever someone decides to promote an idea as a get rich scheme, the only ones getting rich are the ones selling the classes or making the TV shows. If you could actually get rich, they'd just keep their mouths shut and just get rich.
