Chasing Embers might like this tamper that I have hanging in my garage. The wood is hedge aka osage orange. It is comparable to hickory in strength. The tamper is around 3 lbs. Yes, I have used it at a pipe club meeting a while ago. I have not used it since.

When I did a lot of woodturning, I often had my woodchips half way between my knees and my waist. My experience was that all the women at the craft shows loved my work, but were not willing to pay for it.
