I like the taste of Meerschaum pipes but have found the quality of manufacture to occasionally be a few steps behind expectation. Morta seems to be the closest I can get to having a meer like material carved by a western artisan.
My Va blends tend to smoke cleanly but a bit cold when smoked in a meer compared to the warm, chestnut notes I get from my Italian briars.
In your experience, what flavors does morta impart to a subtle blend, like a straight Va, for example?

My experience is the same. I don't get any flavor and didn't even during the break in period. It's essentially petrified wood so I'm guessing it's pretty much like stone.

I do not have much experience as I only have one morta and I've had it for a short while, but I made the experiment of smoking SG English Summer (Straight Virginia Flake) in one of my meers and in my new morta, two bowls, back to back. Started with the morta.
I experienced very little difference between the two pipes (the meer is a straight bulldog and the morta a straight billiard, same size), but the flavor seemed just a bit brighter in the meer from the beginning to end of the bowl, whilst it took a while to fully develop in the morta.
My two cents.
Cheers,
J

I've been 'breaking' in a pair of morta pipes that where cut from the same wood with Orlik Golden Sliced and SG St James plug. Both pipes started with an odd taste that was very noticeable, it's pretty hard to describe but it was kind of a plum flavour but without the sweetness. The plum type flavour has slowly faded away, I've probably smoked 20ish bowls through each pipe, and as it has the flavours from the tobacco have become brighter, particularly noticeable with the Orlik. Both pipes are smoking fairly neutrally at the moment although one does seem to smoke slightly brighter than the other.
