How did you build up carbon on the rim like that?View attachment 189034
I've not built an impressive cake yet, but it's starting to take shape.

Well when you put it that way sure .... If you have seen my pictures, you'd know. Mound the tobacco over the rim and let er rip! I'm a very messy smoker. So light tobacco on the rim?
It looks great!Mostly I just let the lighter come very close to the rim when lighting, so it blackened. But packing a bit too much works too of course. I did char the rim with purpose though.
When you smoke it, do you often hold it with your palm above the chamber? This pipe colored on top first. The shank is coloring now but took quite awhile.View attachment 190630
I have been starting to wonder, if the reason the top of the shank colors first, due to the smoke from your mouth and nose hitting it first. When you smoke it, do you often hold it with your palm above the chamber?
I read somewhere the figurals color anywhere. I dont know but the straight pipes ive seen seem to color the shank first.I have been starting to wonder, if the reason the top of the shank colors first, due to the smoke from your mouth and nose hitting it first.
Yeah all of mine do too. Slot.I think I've found an answer for that. Whether screw in inserts or no, moisture builds around the base of the stem.

Or the heat from lighting... if a hair dryer will add color, a lighter/match will too.I have been starting to wonder, if the reason the top of the shank colors first, due to the smoke from your mouth and nose hitting it first.

Good good. You color yours, and I'll destroy mineI've got four going right now with the washer and tobacco plug. Seems to be improving the speed of coloring.
