Hello Bandik,
if the pipe hasn’t been smoked for quite a time, I suggest you to smoke it and smoke it and..smoke again. This will moisture the briar and could be sufficient to solve the problem. If not enough, I suggest you to put a little beeswax around the shank where it connects to the mortise, this shoulde solve the problem.

I bought an estate Barling Meer cheap, and the seller was honest enough to admit that the mouthpiece may not have been one originally intended for the pipe: it was very loose.

I did some research and found a method of spreading a very thin layer of epoxy resin over the tenon with a pin: it worked for a while, then the friction of removing the mouthpiece gradually wore that layer off.

I wasn't prepared to go through all that time-consuming fiss again, so I took a tiny strip of tisse paper the width of the tenon, and wrapped it around the tenon three times: it worked.

The tissue paper absorbs some of the tar from the smoke, and needs replacing every couple of smokes, but it's a two-minute job. I'm happy with that.

Fingernail polish. Just a tiny bit. Too much and you will be sanding some off. I used the clear but i suppose any color would work.

Needs to be a sticky.

The Mushroom Method is a great way to completely screw up a pipe. A bell-shaped tenon creates a jug-shaped mortise, and what comes next is a MAJOR mess to set right. Never mind when someone manages to bend the tenon.

No big deal for basket pipes, but it definitely is when it comes to collectables. Sometimes total stem replacement is the only way out.

The problem is the ham-fisted-ness of the video watcher is impossible to know.

Watch the video, there's no pressing involved and NO mushrooming the tenon. There are other methods that the ones you use. The method in the video exploits the shape memory of vulcanite.

10-4

The camera-sitting-on-the-bench Mushroom One has been posted a gazillion times, too, so figured that's what it was.

ONLY heating is safe and will work often enough to be worth trying.

If you are in Canada in the winter i would highly suspect that smoking outside couldve caused and already loose stem to get really bad. Take from a fellow Canadian. When we say its not that cold people here on the forum might think plus temperatures. 🤣 This afternoon was really nice. Only -15 celsius or so.
