I've been using a ceramic mortar and pestle for my flakes and such and have been considering switching to volcanic rock (like the ones used to make guacamole) but worry it might retain too much character between poundings. Maybe it should be noted I am one of those few people who don't like avocado although it has no relevance to my concerns. Any opinions on the matter?

I just roll 'em between finger and thumb if they can't just be folded and stuffed. Between the heels of my hands of they're too solid for that. I'm just trying to loosen up the strands of tobacco stuck together into the flake so enough air can move around in the bowl to keep it lit, not to pulverize it into snuff.

If you must use an accessory for this, a weed grinder fits in most pipe travel cases and will do the job without you having to lug manos y matate around.

my hands work well for rubbing out flakes. I just kind of pull it apart a little bit ball it up in the palm of my hand and just rub my hands together for a few seconds until it's at the desired levels. Not sure why that would be hard for anyone to do. Just do the same kind of circular motion one would do with a mortar and pestle. Honestly just confused why one would need extra tools unless it's just for fun cause tools can be fun.

Yes tools can be fun. I was considering buying a Garden Weasel to break up my flakes but decided they are too large to be effective.

Wonder what it would take to make pipe tobacco actually snuffable.
the only pipe tobacco I've encountered that makes a really good snuff is Semois. It is way different then it would seem and it's doesn't need anything added to it to get a decent nicotine absorption. It's like high dry toast but totally different. The floral component is way stronger as snuff. Otherwise most things that make a good pipe tobacco don't work so good with snuff. Oh and semois makes a decent chew in a pinch. It taste a little weird but also a little good but if you're nicing and don't have another option it will keep the murder thoughts down (I can't be the only one right?).

So, what do you use to get it to the right consistency? Cheap coffee grinder?

I use one (mortar and pestle) periodically for grinding spices for cooking. I really don't think it will work well for flake tobacco unless it's crispy. Fingers or a knife ((or both)) are best. Save your money, go old school.

You mean animal style?

Sick is the person who makes pesto in a blender.

I'm a big fan of the cast iron mortar and pestle for kitchen work. Not the tiny one, which kinda sucks, but the decent sized one, that would hold maybe two cups of volume. It just grabs better than any ceramic one I've used. And the walls are thin because iron is strong, so it's heavy and sits in place (with the rubber base), but isn't this stupid bulky thing like the stone ones. And you can hammer stuff with it.

And if you didn't like it, it would make a badass cigar ashtray.

actually as unbelievable as it is almost anything. Literally used my thumb and finger to grind semois into a snuff. I know it sounds unbelivable but it works. Kind of a feel like a pinch I'll make a pinch kind of thing. Though with other tobaccos I've used coffee grinders.
