When opportunity knocks, you’re either ready to open the door or you’re not. Hopefully Jason wises up soon cause those students loans won’t pay themselves.

Years ago, we had a bright young African intern in our office. She was lovely, excellent English, but some idioms would floor her. If I said "jolly bad" or "awfully good", she was banjaxed. I don't blame her, to be fair.

Imagine what things will be like in another ten years when the gazillion kids who never learned a trade or a profession because they wanted to be a Rich and Famous social media "Influencer" reach their 30's.
Most teens are not like this in real life. In fact, there has been much more of a shift back to the trades (at least in rural public schools) as school systems are now seeing the folly behind the ‘college-or-bust’ messaging that was pushed so heavily from about 2000-2016.

This is a classic grumpy old guy take, which is very apt for a pipe forum. Haha.

The willful self-delusion is strong with this one ^^^^

I just did a little recon and a higher percentage of Americans live in major metropolitan areas (urban/suburban) than I thought. It’s around 80%. In that case, I concede that you might be right.

I live in a rural, conservative area so it might just be my confirmation bias as most teens I interact with around here are nothing like you describe.

Glad I don’t live in a big city or have any social media. :)

My experience with interns has touched both extremes of the spectrum over the years.

The biggest shift over time was towards a sense of entitlement amongst a greater percentage of them. If I was half as good as they thought they were with zero experience I’d be richer than Gates.

One dim bulb kept standing too close to the test article (aircraft fuselage) to get a good view, despite being repeatedly admonished to move back to where the rest of us were standing. He wasn’t physically injured when it let go but the ashen look on his face was priceless. He didn’t do that again.

One of the biggest challenges in ranching for me is finding help that aren’t afraid of work. I usually can find people who will do most stuff (poorly) but not haying, mucking, fencing or 5am feeding.

As you know, I've had my share of veterinary interns. Mine come mostly from Cornell, my alma mater.
Most have been great, but some make Jason look respectable.
I once had a guy that stole three Golden Retriever pups from a client.
Had another who set my barn on fire smoking a cigarette.
But in the end, one has taken over most of the duties at my practice and is completely taking over when she finds the right place. If I was half as sharp as her I'd be much better off in life. :)
It astounds me that she is choosing to take this route. There are MUCH more lucrative and prestigious areas both in geography and veterinary practices that she could have followed. She will never be wealthy or famous around here. Much of our clientele are humble hobby farmers, farms barely holding on, and blue collar families. I've been paid in hay and manure many times. :)
And I bet she watched both versions of Creatures Great and Small.
Lucky girl to have that education.

Several years I was asked if I would take on a summer intern. I figured what the hell, sure.

So I met with the intern. It was glorious. Hard worker, truly wanted hands on knowledge in my field of expertise.

I was actually sad when the summer was over.

Two years ago the same school asked if I would like to have another intern. I jumped at the chance to do it again.

This intern, knew everything, didn’t want to get dirty and felt the need to tell me that I work too hard and life isn’t fair.

That intern made it two weeks, only because I tried too hard to make it work.

A few weeks ago I was asked by the same school to try another intern. I told them no thank you.

My time is too valuable.
I did it as a huge favor for some parents whose kid blew his last semester in college and needed a quick in between regular sessions internship to get his degree - lazy young man and I signed off on the paperwork when it was over that he needed from the college on his promise he’d have the research and summaries I’d had him working on within a couple of days (I knew he hadn’t done much of anything). Never saw him again - okay by me, but his parents don’t know and are eternally grateful.
