I am getting a little bit ahead here because they are still in the mail but I went on Ebay and bought a bunch of assorted, estate stumels and an assorted bunch of premolded, vulcanite stems.

My intention is to, one at a time, refurbish the stumels and shape and mount the appropriate stems.

I hope to achieve several things:

- Stop estate PAD. You want another pipe - make one!

- See and feel several different shapes, sizes and angles to find out what I like and not.

- Learn and practice the basic elements of refurbishing/making pipes.

So, was this a good idea or a waste of money?

I am looking at which tools I need to get started fitting a stem to a stumel?

I don't have a lathe or proper pillar drill but I do have some basic power tools

and a pillar type thing to mount a drill on.

I have files but I want to get a set of good files.

A set of chucking reamers?

Do I need a tenon cutter/turner?

What else?

It looks like a fun project. Please keep the photos coming of your success'/failures.

For your purposes, a tenon cutter would be handy, there's really no way to do a good job of fitting a stem without. There are bush rigs you can build to sand the tenon to size but a cutter does the shoulder too, so you get a proper flat fit there.

Here is one source in the States. I don't know if they ship.

Thanks, but it increases the cost rather a lot to import from the US.

That's why I would prefer to buy from Europe if possible.

This looks like fun. I have collected a few pipe lots from the ‘bay and have accumulated some stummels without stems. I eventually need to get some stock stems and a tenon cutter. In the meantime I will practice restoring some that have stems. Good luck with your project!

Thanks, Husky. There must be other applications for that bit!
Do you mean there must be other things you can use instead of a tenon cutter or

that there must be more things you can use the tenon cutter for?

You might get away from PAD for a while but it sounds like you're in for a new kind of TAD. Tool acquisition disorder is a whole other world.

Here's where you want to get your files from. You can use the search or filters to find exactly what you want.

I called this place for chucking I was looking for and asked them who was a reputable distributor for the company

I hope this helps.

Good idea to learn on random stummels and ends. I have a few pipes coming to practice on as well, but stuck with complete pipes. If the initial outlay for your parts wasn't much, I'd say you don't have much to lose.

You're very welcome. Along with the chucking reamers, (both an A-Z set and a fractional set will cover most of the bases) a pin gauge set is essential. I have a .061"-.250" set and a .251"-.500" set as well. A good set of calipers to go along with all that will tie the whole thing together. All this will allow you to just work on the mortise. The pin gauges will also allow you to measure draught holes and airways. If you are into this, you're in for a long, crazy and expensive ride. It's very satisfying to bring an old smoker back to life though. I wish you luck.

I meant other things for which the tenon cutter could be used but have no examples. Maybe it's too specialized!

Actually I have a very similar device. I shoot a sport called Bench rest.

To get maximum accuracy everything's made to be as equal as possible.

Among other things case necks are turned to a specific thickness

down to half a thousandth of an inch using a case neck turner.

Pretty much the same thing.

That's an interesting tool that I've never seen before. I'd like to know how it works out if you try it.

So I got started on the first project. With the help of a friend I will make a tenon cutter when we both have time.

However a few of the stumels have really large mortises so in the meantime I got a couple of finished stems for 9mm filters that I can hopefully fit wit a bit of careful reaming.

First up is a Armonia, made by Savinelli, which has a large crack in the side.

armonia-left-600x450.jpg

armonia-bottom-600x450.jpg

It had a thick layer of cake and when I had scraped it out i noticed two things.

The draft hole enters almost half an inch above the bottom of the bowl.

armonia-bowl-600x450.jpg

And the crack goes all the way through...

armonia-crack-600x450.jpg

Is it possible to fill the crack with cyanoacrylate or is this one scrap?

There are bush rigs you can build to sand the tenon to size but...

Do you have any link or pics of this? It might spare me from inventing it again.
