Way before NASA. Was developed for lathe forming of aluminum nose cones for bombs. Using a blunt nosed tool against a flat aluminum sheet spinning at high speed in a lathe to "form" the nose cone of bombs. the slightest hint of water and the nose cone "prematurely detonated." BTW: the secret ingredient in WD-40 (tm) besides kerosene is fish oil...
