Actually no, the oil doesn't mask the oxidation
Actually yes as some use Obsidian Oil to darken a lightened oxidized stem. I myself remove the oxidation without exposing non oxidized material and rarely have to use oil.

You are supposed to use the oil on a non-oxidized stem. It's not for removing or masking it but helping prevent it. It sounds like you found an alternative that works for you.

Well, then, I am a rule breaker of the first order. I love a bit of a rub with an oiled cloth to make my stems nice, shiny, and black. And I am talking about pipes.
