Doesn't bother me any. I do it with the blinds open and the lights on. No shame
Once upon a time, I was in court and watched a criminal trial, for indecent exposure.

A woman was taking a walk in her neighborhood and walked by a home.

She looked at the home, and saw a man abusing himself on his sofa, in his living room. He had the blinds on the window down, but the slats open.

His defense was he lowered the blinds, and had no intention or expectation that anyone would peep through his window.

Verdict - guilty and ten dollar fine.

This was before all the sex offender registration laws.

My oldest son is a lawyer for a well known food delivery gig service corporation. 90% of what he does is go after people who expose themselves to these delivery people. Even if they don't open the door all the way, they can get you a year in the county poke and up to $6,000, and every delivery person has their phone in their hand when they drop off your beer and cheese. His job is easy, here's the pic, want to waste your money and go to jail, or just write us a check? If you can be seen from the front door stoop, you are in public. It blows my mind what people will do. Just because it worked in some cheap porno you wanted, doesn't mean that it works in real life.

Coming to the door, is one thing.

The lady said she had to stop and turn around and look twice, from the sidewalk, to believe what she was seeing.:)

The judge was the one and only liberal judge I’ve encountered in forty years of law practice.

Yesterday I was smoking a GLP blend Cairo and I was thinking how it's more expensive then what I smoke more often, yet it cost next to nothing for that smoke session. The only expensive thing with a pipe is the pipe. And it's funny how it works. If you don't know how much you'll use it 50 bucks is a lot. If you realize it will last you decades and get smoked weekly suddenly three or four hundred is cheap.

In PA if you're in your home you are in your home. Doesn't matter if your home is all glass. You can legally answer the door nude. However if you say certain things when you answer the door then you can get in lots of trouble. But until then.... I only know because I had a neighbor that did shit like that. And like always was the most judgmental piece of garbage in the whole place. Like the kind of guy that thinks he is morally superior to the nice family down the street that has a ugly lawn. You know the type of people that give a stranger the shirt off their back, but how dare they let their lawn not be manicured perfectly.

Back to the subject 😃, I listened to a Pipes Mag podcast that discussed a ‘mentor’. Seems like a fantastic idea. Would be great for the local smoke shops to have a newbie event.
Sadly there are no B&M tobacconists in Sydney, Oz anymore
I don't regard cigarette kiosks/vape joints as tobacconists

When I first started with pipes in the 1970's there was an excellent tobacconist near my work place.
He was a great mentor who introduced me to English/Balkan blends and Virginia/VaPers when I had been smoking OTC aromatics previously
He closed up shop when the arcade he was in was knocked down

Personally, I think a great starter set up is a Scotte pipe kit (which includes a pear wood pipe, 2 pipe case, tobacco pouch, reamer, redwood tool, and other accessories), with a cob, Bic lighter (or Crocs ez lighter), pack of pipe cleaners, and pouch of Half and Half and Captain Black Royal.

I believe this is everything you need for about $50 out the door.

Once acclimated and liking it, then pick up a bunch of 1 ounce bulk samples from each tobacco family during a 20% off sale (an English, Oriental, Virginia, Burley, VaPer, VaBur, deer tongue, DFK, maybe some aromatics) to see what you like. Then branch off trying samples of the family that you enjoy before going deep.

Of course forum membership increases the price of poker since you all are a bunch of enablers (which can be both a good and bad thing).

You could try aluminum foil pipes. I used to see them a lot at a local park clean ups with cub scouts. I have no idea what they are for. It's not like I smoke crack cocaine or something.

Here’s a pear wood pipe one of my assistants gave me for Christmas. It’s a cool, sweet smoker and would be a good starter pipe.

This $200 when new Lorenzetti looks better but smokes no different.

Pear wood pipes are on eBay for cheap.

Not a bad option to start out.

I agree, it's not a bad way to start.

Here is the Scotte pipe kit link. The pipe included is similar looking to a Savinelli 606 KS. While it doesn't smoke as well and is heavier, tis a decent starter pipe and the stuff that come with it are worth the price of admission.

Here is the Savinelli 606 for reference.20220724_110440.jpg

This segue into mentoring is perhaps something that a pipe smoker's club could try through their membership ... of course with the support of the associated B&M. The B&M could make up starter sets ... perhaps use basket briars instead of pear wood pipes at much the same price ... tobacco genres from their house blends ...

Nah, probably not ... makes too much sense.

Not sure why you're encouraging new pipe smokers to start out cheap. Where do you think many of those heavily marked-down estate pipes come from?
I remember the sticker shock of a basket pipe and 2 ounces of tobacco as a broke college student in 2001. I also thumbed my nose at cobs. Had I not been with a friend interested in beginning with me, I would've backed out.

Coming from cheap gas station cigars and with many coming from cigarettes, start up costs can be daunting (as reflected in many lurker posts). If someone wants to jump in the deep end, a $75 Savinelli will do the trick, but it's quite an investment out of the gate for something that can be frustrating to get the hang of.

Had I known then what I know now, I would have done as I suggested in this thread and worked my way up to a basket pipe or Savinelli (which I did less than a year into picking up the pipe again).

I will say my basket pipe is still in use today and a great smoker, especially for stout blends. And cobs have both their place and my favorite open draw.

I was joking of course. I started with basket pipes too as a kid, then moved up to Brighams. But some of the best deals I've gotten have been lightly used estates.
I agree, lightly used estates are the way to go once you know pipes are for you (and don't mind smoking a dead man's pipe). Cheap, easy to find online, and often "name brand", a good estate pipe is a great thing to either build a rotation or "collection".
