This little one doesn't seem to favor the season!

To me it's about the hardest kind of hunting.
Now if I shot some in the yard that would be easy.

As a kid in South Louisiana I was in the woods limiting out constantly and I’ve busted thousands. I can honestly say that those were the best times spent in the woods and the best hunts in my life.
Nothing compares for me including upland, waterfowl and big game.
I’ll take a double 20ga, a pipe and a shell vest and stay out till I’m stumbling out of the woods in the dark. I wonder if kids now still even do that ?

Try it with a .22 pistol, headshots only.
Not the same as hunting African elephants with a .600 Nitro Express, maybe, but a tricky business.

BIG difference in how they cook, though (mentioning it in case you've had squirrel before and didn't like it)
The grays you can treat like chicken. The reds are tough and need something longer. Low and slow. I used to smoke 'em in one of those R2D2 widgets with the water pan in the middle. Liked the result as much as pork.

Squirrels fed alot of pioneers. Back in black powder days, they would 'bark' them, aim for the branch under them and the concussion would kill them, preserving the meat.

What got me back into squirrel hunting is the fact that it's a great way to teach marksmanship, how to identify trees, and just learning the woods in general.
My son is growing up fast... We have to make some of these benchmarks quick.
Hitting a squirrel head at 50 yards with a 22 is probably a hundred times harder than hitting a broad side deer at 50 yards.

I've cooked some pretty terrible squirrel dishes before, it can be tricky.
I usually boil 'em, then fry, then simmer in gravy... It's always pretty not great, but still fun to eat meat you went out and got yourself.
I fly fish for squirrels at my local park more than I fish for trout. It’s great practice and fun. Obviously I’m not using a hook but rather tying a piece of yarn onto the tippet. If I can get a squirrel interested enough to pick up the yarn it’s a catch. It’s not that easy. They spook easily and will more often than not ignore the yarn even when you place it under their nose.
I never have, always wanted to. I mean, hell, I could do it whenever. I live out in the country, I have access to shotguns and a couple 10/22s. There are squirrels and rabbits everywhere. You know what? I’m gonna give it a go.
