Spigot Origins?

Just why do some pipes have spigot? I seem to remember it had something to do with pipe smoking soldiers during WW I.

Spigot pipes were around well before WW I. The whole shell casing thing makes for interesting story.

^^^ I agree. I remember reading that the spigot was originally designed for soldiers in the field. It allowed them to use a cartridge casings to repair their pipes if damaged.

Can someone tell me the how and why the pipe spigot evolved? I seem to remember it was an invention of WW I soldiers.
