it’s just somewhat scarce by both design and demand.
Call around B&Ms. Scarcity is what's manufactured. It's easier to find than the legends say. I've never paid more than $30/bag for any of the Esotericas. Kingfisher really isn't a unicorn as it's no longer produced. Just a rarity.

I think they are worth checking out, especially if you are a moderate smoker like me. That said, my 4th generation is nearly gone. That stuff is top notch.

I miss them sometimes due to their short availability, I wanted some Sun Bear but the budget was too tight. No worries though. I'm only two years into the hobbie and have hundreds of blends to try still.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it ain’t. If you never try it you’ll never know. Whether thats a good thing or a bad thing I suppose is up to the individual and their budget at any given time.

The same can be said for food, wine, beer, clothes, scotch, cars, chocolate, snow machines, christmas lights, college, trailers, boats, vacations, shoes, kids, spring water, parties, bungee jumping, surfboards, guns.......

It can all cost money to varying degrees and will provide varying degrees of a quality experience. A man must think about his future, right up until he gets hit by a bus tomorrow.

life is full of great decisions that feel terrible and terrible decisions that feel great. Each man must fins his own balance between the two.

that answers your question, right?

I believe they still have some 4th Gen at Watch City.

My dad was in politics. I love my father very much but If I ever end up like him I will never forgive myself. I would walk into the woods with nothing but a swiss army knife and toothpaste blabbering like a fool and pulling out all my body hair before I would ever enter politics.

When the thought of entering politics ever shows up in my brain, I apply the Bill Cole method of decision making:

"The next time you're going to do anything or say anything or buy anything, think it over very carefully. When you're sure you're right, forget the whole thing. "

I have not tried a small batch or limited edition lately that I have not enjoyed. Right now The Haunting I am really enjoying...wish I had picked up more then 10.

I generally avoid them. I avoid them for one simple reason. I don't want to fall in love with a blend I can't get again. Best case for me would be interesting blend that I like but won't miss. Though it seems to me like for a small batch someone making has to think it's better then average but is mostly determined not by quality but by availability. They're often made with leafs that aren't grown at industrial commercial levels. It reminds me of what a sommelier said about wine, you're not paying more because a wine is better you're paying more because it is either more labor intensive or harder to produce that grape and the market does put some quality control in the fact that someone has to buy it at that price and has to enjoy it more. That doesn't mean everyone will enjoy it more.

I used to think people were nuts for paying the high prices for McClelland CC, etc. But I didn’t think about the fact that it was easy for me to say that sitting on the modest stash of McC blends that I liked and that should last me many years if I’m careful. If you can afford it, and want to try one of those blends, go for it. The only caveat would be that a beginner on a budget might want to devote that budget to a larger quantity of readily-available blends instead of small amounts of secondary market blends while the getting is still good

I think so. I typically use the small batch blends as special occasion/ holiday blends that I will smoke a few times a year.

I have a tin of a “unicorn” tobacco I paid $8.00 for years ago and I occasionally see it on Pipestud’s site listing and quickly selling for $225.00 for a 50gram tin.

Is it worth $112.50 an once.... not to me, but obviously it is to enough people to keep the value obscenely high.

I don’t personally believe this 2 once tin has more value than 4 lbs of Directors Cut, but somebody obviously does.

Technically, if you are not sending it to pipestud to sell it, you are valuing it higher than whatever you’d get from the deal. What would it net you, say, $80-$90 an ounce or so?

@hoosierpipeguy Last I looked (2 days ago) they do indeed have some of the small batch 4th Generation/ SG 10 yr. Virginia at Watch City. Can’t bring myself to buy it, on account of I rarely reach for a Straight Va. That box alone is pretty cool, though.. to store lighters, nic nacs, and whatnot. Not to mention a purportedly delicious tobacco lying within...

I was very fond of Steven Books House of Calabash blends. My favorite blend was more than $10/oz. There was, in my opinion, something special here. Could be the skill of the blender... could be the aged tobacco he used. I can’t quantify it, but I always paid more for Mr. Books creations.
