My first pipe was a Peterson system 303!I still have it bought it as a whole starter kit from the peterson shop over the phone and was talked through the whole process of breaking in the pipe cleaning and maintaining. It is vital to seek the best advice otherwise it can be a frustrating thing to learn the art of keeping the pipe lit!
I think ill smoke my 303 now :)

Great start, Welcome. When I was 19, I was smoking everything out

of a pipe except tobacco.

Failte, I to say go for the briar, and a Pete system is a great starter. Due to the 'chamber', you will not have to deal w/the gurgle that is bound to happen to the best of pipe smokers. I too have a Blk 303, a Rustic 304.

Yes....a 303. Kinda like having an old Chevy. I am struggling to get by with only 3 in my collection. A good pipe. Looking back, I wish that would have been my first pipe.

thank you hobie. i am looking to expand my collection soon. i am currently smoking a basket briar from my local tobacco shop. but i am not well educated on pipe makers and their quality. and i am not quite ready to spend a small fortune on a new pipe, as my basket briar has treated me well and is a good smoker. and what do you mean by taking pics of the place?

I think Hobie is still confused from being beaned by the Pipesmagazine.com secret decoder ring his wife found and threw at him. (@ Hobie: ekomS a lwob fo SP slluB eyE ekalF dna uoy dluohs eb enif.)

Wolf is going to purchase his first pipe at the Peterson B&M (Great way to start by the way Wolf.) and Hobie may have confused you with him.
A hearty welcome to you both!

The ladies love a pipe... at least until you start smoking latakia. :D

The only downside to a 303 is the extensive cleaning you have to do to the "system" after every bowl. It really gathers up a lot of cr*p.

I've always told folks new to pipe smoking to buy the best they can "comfortably" afford. Some cheap pipes are great smokers but some, unfortunately, are terrible. That's just been my experience of course, but I think it's ok to spend a little to tip the odds in your favor that you'll be getting a good one. Peterson's are great, I have 2 and they are among my favorites.

Welcome to the family, friend. My first pipe was a no-name briar purchased in Mallorca, Spain when I was just 19. I am now 60 and still treasure that wonderful pipe. You'll find that, as the years rapidly pass, your growing collection of pipes will form a chronicle of life events. You will also find a brotherhood of men of all ages, nationalities and positions that share your appreciation of the pipe. It's a rare thing.
