The more surface area, the quicker the burn, all else being equal.
My firewood analogy:
Ribbon is like kindling. Burns faster.
Flakes, coins, chunks of cake/plug are like logs. Takes longer to burn (if they’re somewhat intact).
flakes tend to burn longer. Bigger ribbons burn slower and shag burns supper fast.
Of the tobaccos I’ve personally tried, the twists (e.g. Samuel Gawith/ Gawith & Hoggarth) are very dense and long lasting.
A bowl of Bengal Slices lasted well over two hours for me. It's a thick sliced cake. Crumble to smoke. I didn't crumble too finely. Flakes that I smoke fold and stuff don't last that long. But I do fold and twist around before stuffing.
I just got done with 3 grams of Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake. It was over 2 hours (Almost 3 episodes of Game of Thrones. 
If one can master and have an enjoyable smoke from rather dry Clan Aromatic ribbon cut tobacco then he truly can consider himself as being an experienced (sophisticated?)pipe smoker
I just got a few OZ of this stuff and can confirm, this twist is about as dense as it gets. Fantastic smoke, if a bit strong and also somewhat hard to find.
Flake, coin, plug, and rope all burn slowly relative to loose tobacco cuts, and depending on their preparation and the thickness of the pieces. Even rubbed out, I've had notably long smokes from flake, etc. They go well in small pipes for a longer smoke.
Yessir! I had a bowl of sweet coconut twist last night, which has a fairly spacious chamber, but it was sliced very thin and fully rubbed out. I completely underestimated how long it would take to smoke. I figured an hour and a half, but it turned into a two and a quarter hour smoke.
Meant to say “I had a bowl of sweet coconut twist last night in my hobby block meer, which has a fairly spacious chamber,” as a tobacco blend certainly doesn’t have a chamber ?
