Relevant to the topic but slightly askew of it, I don't wear a smoking jacket as such, but when I'm smoking I wear clothes that I know I will not use when visiting, going to meetings or business arrangements. I have a set of trousers and jumpers that I call my house/garden and smoking gear. These suffice for smoking and can easily be thrown in the wash after a couple or days. I also wear, particularly in colder seasons, a sleeveless body warmer with plenty of pockets that can carry all the accessories from lighters to tampers, pipes to pouches! All this saves on using up decent clothing and stops it reeking of stale tobacco odours. I think that, for myself, a smoking jacket would be a tad too indulgent. I already have my own, as it were!

My wife bought me a Native American pattern "shirt-jac" on an online sale, and though it is nothing

like the classic smoking jacket, I have declared it mine. She says it looks like I was born in it, though

I am not Native American.

Betabrand makes reversible ones but they aren't terribly traditional.

I ditched my smoking jacket and smoking cap because it didn't help much. This big old wooly beard holds a lot of pipe smell, so, seemed a waste of energy to don a hat and coat before filling and lighting my pipe.
Only so much time, you know!

I think the protection from tobacco odors explanation of smoking jackets was a bit of a rationalization

or ruse. I think they were more a "host at home," or "host on the town" garment, meant to give the

dressy upper crust a more playful colorful look, with so much of their time spent in black and white

tie clothing. Then us plain folks, some of us, got ahold of smoking jackets at the thrift stores and used

them as a sort of costume of borrowed extravagance. You can rent smoking jackets online for a costume,

and also with a rental pipe!

If anyone is interested in buying a smoking jacket you can get a new one here, http://www.gentlemansemporium.com/store/coats.php, I do not have one myself so I cannot speak of there quality, but they do look somewhat the ones from the days of old.

That's pretty cool. I have actually bought a few things from Gentlemen's Emporium.

My favorite smoking jacket is a Cabala's Bush Jacket. It has enough pockets to hold everything. But then again it's my favorite jacket for a lot of things. But no one ever accused me of being a slave to fashion! In college, I was a Vietnam vet so the uniform of the day was jeans, blue button down shirts and a field jacket. Come to think about it, now that I'm retired I'm back to that same UD.
