I'm only a few months into this pipe smoking journey so I'm guessing certain things will change with time. One of the things I have noticed about myself is that I do not like to talk while I'm smoking. I like to read, watch TV, have a coffee or a cocktail, and even peruse the internet. What I don't like to do is try to carry on a conversation with anyone. This causes me to seek out solitude when I reach for a pipe. It may be because I use re-breathing and retro-haling almost exclusively. I think I have the terms correct. These don't seem to me to be conducive to chatting. Is this common or is this one more odd ball trait I seem to be so fond of?

Just like everyone else I smoke cigars when I am in a group and pipes are more of a solo thing. I meet four other Saturday afternoons and two of us smoke cigars and the other three do pipes. There's conversation going all the time, so pipes are a private time thing is not true.

time will help. I've been at it for years and face to face talking is fine. Phone for some reason and smoking just doesn't work too great.

I can talk and smoke a pipe at the same time, but it means often a delay in response or asking the other person to repeat themselves. Kind of like when I am driving. I'm paying more attention to what I am doing than the conversation itself. That said, I'd much prefer not to have conversation. My pipe time is my relaxing and meditation time.

Other people even existing near me is often the opposite of relaxing for me (depending on the person). I'm pretty asocial, I often don't want conversation even when I'm not smoking a pipe.

Now, I’m known to have difficulty chewing gum and walking, but anyone who’s met me knows that I can talk anywhere, anytime, while doing anything.
I started smoking a pipe and quickly joined two different pipe clubs. We talk, and solve all the world’s problems. So I “grew up” smoking and talking.

You should see me run an auction while juggling chainsaws.

Definitely true for me as well...can't stand trying to talk while smoking a pipe. I'm with the others who have to make it a cigar if going to smoke and converse at the same time.

No. No talking here. But I pretty much smoke in my yard. Neighbors largely ignore me when I smoke on my front stoop. Oddly, when I’m in my backyard which is much more private I get engaged more. Mainly by this chatty new neighbor. It is kind of annoying that there must be an acknowledgment of my presence by her saying hi simply because we are both in our backyard simultaneously. Hi has become 45 minutes several times now. But mainly just want to be in my sanctuary unmolested, and to not have a drawn out smoking experience. My new move is to announce how I forgot something on the stove and must run off. I finish my pipe on the upper deck which has a better divider screen a few minutes later.

No, it's tricky to hold a conversation while smoking a pipe. It's frustrating to me anyways because I feel like I'm forever lighting it, like it's constantly going out. If I want to smoke and talk, that's what cigars are for.
That's what happens to me too. Cigar - no problem. A pipe? Continually relighting when I'm trying to talk with someone - I need to concentrate a fix on the task at hand when the pipe is lit.

The great thing about pipes is once you get beyond the litany of stupid questions most people realize that you just want solitude. If have always found that people usually try talking to me when I am chewing tobacco, usually in a disparaging fashion, especially in New York. Since I chew plug or twist it's usually something along the lines of 'thats disgusting, why don't you f*ck off to the backwoods of Virginia'. In the South I have always found people ask you what you are chewing and either ask you for some or offer you some of their chew. On that basis you can understand why I spend my winters in Florida!
