Hey guys,

I am a fairly new pipe smoker, I encounter this situation that I found the tobacco became rather tasteless in the final 1/3 of the bowl, they all stated out very flavorful but when they reached the final 1/3, I was like smoking through hollow smoke.

This happen from time to time on my different pipes and tobacco so I am pretty sure that’s not the pipe and the tobacco’s fault. May I have your comment on what’s happening and your suggestion to fix this?

Thanks in advance!!

Smoking fast creates more heat and that evaporates any flavoring volatiles in or added to the tobacco. Like hickory wood burning in a bonfire compared to hickory smouldering making lots of meat smoking flavor, slow smouldering gives flavorful smoke.

looks like smoking too fast is the consensus in this case, I will try to smoke even slower afterwards, thanks for the comment!

I was packing too tight and was getting the same result.

I also try to smoke slow, and even slower when I get down to the bottom third.

However some tobaccos just "die" at the bottom. I personally found that with some of the Peterson Dunhill repros.

Thats pretty common. Lots of things can happen, the topping burns off, the smoke constantly going over it makes it bitter. I wouldn’t worry about it…

When my palette gets worn out I can’t taste shit. Happens all the time and I hate it. I find stepping away from the pipe for two days revives it and I’m off to the slow races again.
