Smaller Pipes...

I love my tiny pipe. It gets a lot of use. Though I prefer medium to large chambers and don't understand how it can be hard to clench any pipe. It's not strength as much as finding the sweet spots. Though with average sized pipes I find you can clench with just your lips.

I prefer smaller pipes for twist and flake and even ribbon cut when I want a shorter smoke. I have a nice dr boston(butz choquin second) bulldog that is small size. But I’m a big fan of the standard legend and pride cobs at .75”x 1.25”.

I usually like about a group 5, like the Peterson XL90, but lately have been using smaller pipes like the Peterson 221 for cube cuts, mostly Stokkebye 41 Cube Cut & Sutliff Match Edgeworth.

A full XL90 of Cube Cut would need a day off!

I have the full spectrum of sizes, but on average I reach for a group 3 or 4 size. The type and cut of the tobacco has a bearing on which size I select.

I do have a Lorenzo Dublin. But, as to the question of smaller pipes, I find that lately I'm much less inclined to reach for them as I've become a bit intolerant of frequent refills.

I also have changed my taste for smaller size because of hand held logs of the past. Don’t mind frequent refills, find that less flavor change results.

I love to experiment with a new blend, trying them in big pipes, small pipe, tall pipes, squat pipes, etc... My smallest are Savinelli Piumas, about a .5" diameter bowl. I don't smoke them often, but mostly when trying out a new blend to pull the nuances of flavors out.

I made this change to smaller pipes years ago after I discovered the Falcon pipe and have never looked back. I don't even own briar pipes anymore, just Falcon stems and lots of different bowl shapes and sizes.

My sister sent me a MM hardwood pipe as a gift with a tin of Peterson Elizabethan. I've always admired the simplicity of these little pipes, and seeing it in person made me think of Danish furniture, really quite elegant. It gave it a smoke last night, and it is a good little cooker. My sister joked it is the pipe equivalent of a purse pistol.

The Missouri Meerschaum Country Gengleman is one of the first pipes in my collection that I would dare clench, in large part due to the stem being so easily replaceable.

Generally speaking ,I prefer group 3-4 size pipes but a large part of my pipes are about size 2 (Dunhill) since I don't do partially loaded bowls, most often I'm reaching for group 2 to 3 smaller to med chamber size pipes

I prefer smaller pipes too. Always end up with em bigger than I want tho. That's why I'm just going to do commissions now, and get exactly what I want! Lol

There's quite a few nice Musico's on sp right now in the same size. I highly recommend them. You definitely get more than your money's worth.
