Hi!
So, I've smoked pipe for some months and cigars and cigarillas before.
I have two pipes, and now whenever I smoke, I feel weak and drowsy.

Now, what's different from 50 other such discussions that I read through and studied — I don't feel better from sugar, chocolates, sweets, water; I feel bad the morning after and have darker circles under eyes; I also feel like what I'm smoking stinks.

As I remember, it wasn't like that when I started. I'm starting to think this is a byproduct poisoning, not nicotine poisoning (?)
Naturally, I cleaned the pipes a dozen of times: alcohol, salt, wipes, scrape. I smoked without inhaling, but also inhaling minimally. Don't notice a difference.

I'm preparing to stop smoking pipes, but can't leave a mystery unresolved!

Thank you for your advice!

Do you have a type of tobacco perhaps ? Cigars and such wouldn't have perique or Latakia which some people might be reactive to given the fermentation which involves certain bacteria. There's allergies and then there is sensitivity. Two different things but result in same symptoms. Harder to test for a sensitivity vs allergy testing. Go back to cigars that you know have been agreeable to you to make sure your baseline is the same. Then smoke pure blends of just burley, just Latakia, just perique and forget about their taste just focus on your reactions health wise. You have to narrow it down and eliminate variables. Try to get uncased and untopped as possible.

Stop smoking altogether for about a week and see if the symptoms go away.

I second @dottlejockey's advice. Caveat emptor: a doctor will most likely tell you to quit forever, but he can't force you. I'd still go see one in case this is related to something else other than smoking. A full battery of tests should be in order, I'd say.

My thought here would be to rule out the most dangerous possibilities first, namely, cardiac issues or atherosclerosis which become apparent when exposed to nicotine, thereby restricting the vascular system. After the big concerns are addressed, one can either just quit, citing the disagreeability, or try tweaks to enable a continuation of the hobby.

There is no way to get nicotine poisoning from pipe smoking. You could try but you have to start eating the tobacco instead of smoking it. If you are a new smoker you are probably sensitive to nicotine which can make you feel sick until you get used to it. Good luck regardless.

Sorry, but that’s just bad advice. Why would you wait to “get used” to something that is very obviously causing you health issues?

Thank you all for very different ideas!

Allow me not to quote each (I don't know how).
I see everything falls into these categories:
- I have a cardiac condition
- I have an allergy to something
- I have a reaction to pipe tobacco (Perique, Latakia)

Also, some comments:
- Copperhead, yes, when searching for "feeling bad after tobacco pipe" smth half of links are from this forum, and all about nicotine poisoning
- BingBong, no, is this blend particularly monstrously heavy?

So, I don't think I have any heart problems, I in fact enjoy jogging, calisthenics and kettlebell a bit, I am under 40.
Also, seems clear that since pipe tobacco and process is lighter than cigs, I probably can't have nicotine poisoning from pipe, but not from cigars.
By the way! I do get that lightheaded feeling smoking a whole cigar, and it's something different. No sleeping for hours, no dark circles under eyes.

I swear I thought this might be inhaling something burnt, like maybe poor quality lacquer, paint, mouthpiece (??)
Or self-hypnosis of X-men level?

Thanks again, I'm still hoping to crack this riddle :)

FWIW, I trust strangers on a pipe smoking forum more than I trust doctors. You're lucky if they're just incompetent, and not an incompetent bastard. Just my experience, lol. I would definitely at least try not smoking for a while, if you have that adverse of a reaction. Eat healthier and get enough sleep is the answer to most people's problems.

Well it is always possible to worry ones self sick. Sometimes even to the level of a panic attack, which still might not be the worst thing to have diagnosis by a professional.

I read that nicotine metabolism efficiency is, too, largely genetically determined. Didn't ask my father, because he smoked, I guessed he's alright. And then he told me that everything but the finest cigars made him tired 🙉 So this hypothesis works out.
I now put away all tobacco. Sleep's a little better.
