Went garage sailing yesterday and found only a couple of tiddly items which you would not find interesting. Oh, well, there is always next Saturday.
You're in for a real treat!
Here's a short lecture on the "PHOLOSOPHY AND TACTICS OF GARAGE SAILING"
The key to success is persistence. You can't give up. If you have a bad day, just forget it and try again next Saturday. You might fail to find something good over and over but finally you'll hit home with a winner.
Plan out an area to search. Look for good neighborhoods close to you and hit them on a regular basis.
Iron clad rules. There are none. Expect the unexpected; that's part of the fun. It's like a treasure hunt.
Early bird catches the worm. Be willing to start early. We usually go out about 7 in the morning. By noon things usually slow down so you have to decide when you want to quit for the day. When we walk up on a sale we always greet the seller with a "good morning" or something like that. Creating a good repour with the seller can help when negotiating.
Use the internet. Find a site or two that lists garage sales in your area and especially look for "neighborhood" or "community" garge sales. I like ads that have pictures and also will look them up on Google earth to see what the area looks like if I'm not familiar with it.
Take cash. Take lots of small bills and even some coins.
Bundle. If you find several items at a sale try to get the seller of give you a discount price for all of them. Remember, haggling is part of the game. (I never haggle over items of $1 or less. But that's just me}
Keep a lookout for items that are not your thing but are valuable and you can resell for a profit. An example is... I spotted a watch for sale that I had no personal interest in, but I bought it anyway. The seller inherited it and she just wanted to get rid of it so she said I could have it for $1. I sold it a week later on the web for $200.
Try to get your wife to go with you. She might bitch and complain at first but if she's like mine, she'll probably find more stuff she wants than you do. You wouldn't believe how many kitchen gadgets mine has bought. If you have her support you can discuss things before you buy and you have an extra pair of eyes to spot the sales and items.
Look from the street. When we're out driving around we will pull up in front of a sale we take a look to decide if we want to get out and look around. It's a personal thing, but for us if we see a bunch of clothes and kid's toys and little else, it's a no go and we move on.
The perfect garage sale. It's one where the seller has lots of good stuff and "just want's to get rid of it". As opposed to the guy who has a lot of trash and wants to make big money off it.
I could probably go on but by now you're probably tired anyway. Good luck.
