I have been having a problem lately with 965 bulk biting like a pit bull. Is there a certain shape that works better for shag cuts? Most of mine are billiards and all my other Bach is either chunky or flake, so I tend to gravity fill also.

I've enjoyed both tinned and bulk 965 and never experienced bite. I get that with aromatics, from the flavoring ingredients and moisture, I guess. I find 965 mildest in fairly wide bowls associated with pots, authors, and diplomats, but for me they go great in billiards, and with no bite. Are you smoking fast? 965 is a hearty blend but not extra strong for most people.

My mixture 965 is a ribbon cut, one of the most forgiving cuts in the realm of pipe blends IMO. Shag cut is cigarette consistency and what I suspect is that the tobacco may need some drying and/or you need to slow down on your smoking cadence and keep the shank dry with judicious use of a pipe cleaner while smoking. Blends like 965 can bite if puffed too hard and in my experience with tinned tobaccos, it's good to open the tin, screw the lid back in and let it sit and adjust to the atmosphere for a day or so. That's what I do, I'm not saying that is the right way, just my way. It's a great blend but any mixture with orientals commands a little respect when it's puffed on or it will bite.
