What purpose is pipe screens for? To keep tobacco from getting in your mouth?

Dirty hippy? Nah, upstanding members of society like myself also use screens in my little pipe.

Can't see why one would need one for a tobacco pipe though.
Occasionally when the last 3rd of a bowl is stirred and tamped, baccy can slightly block the draught hole.
That's easily fixed with a pipe cleaner.

Not really necessary for pipe tobacco, and this is just as well. Pipe smokers have enough gear to worry about without adding screens to a pipe.

I'm just not sure what anyone is talking about. Do marijuana abusers filter the pot through a screen before loading it? Or, is the screen like a filter of sorts? Do pot users even use tobacco pipes? just in my limited exposer to seeing pot users on TV, I assumed that paraphernalia was small. Wouldn't a full tobacco pipe kill them?
