Savinelli Roma Lucite 673 KS

This was an impulse buy on Black Friday. I’m not a filtered pipe enthusiast nor do I often stray from my collection of classic tapered billiards. I’m a simple bloke all around with my tobacco and pipes. Matches 860 always made this pipe look like an appendage and having it in my hand it is truly comfortable. I’ve purchased it, along with a pound of Pegasus and both arrived a moment ago.

This is the first pipe I own of a shallower depth. Although I wish it’s chamber diameter was a bit wider, I plan to dedicate it to Pegasus.

I seldom enjoy a dottle-less smoke. I’ve often wondered if I’d achieve that if the bowl depth was diminished. Hence this purchase. Pegasus blender Bob Runowski also suggests use of your widest pipe. I anticipated this pipe being a bit wider in chamber. Nonetheless, it’s a bit cliche, I know. The 673 one of Savinelli’s biggest sellers, due in no small part to John, aka Matches 860.

I’m excited to enjoy this pipe. It comes with a balsa filter in place along with a plastic insert for the filterless fans and I’ll try it each way.

So much for Pegasus. It’s maiden bowl was Granger. Sorry Savinelli. But I smoke burley scraps.

Well? Wonder no more. It smoked clean and dry to the bottom. Kudos Savinelli! The balsa filter was dry post bowl. A squeeze yielded some softness from the heat but no moisture. A cool, dry smoke.

I've found the filters entirely optional. Most of the Sav's smoke well just leaving the filter out, and if the draw is too open, an adaptor works for me. I have a smooth 673 KS Opera with a tan and red band. I also like the balance, flow, and wide bit. It's a great pipe, and it has some of the heft of a Peterson, which I like. You snagged a good one there.
