Welcome fazakerley.
That's a really cool artifact indeed.
It'd be very difficult to positively identify if all the markings are gone, if the silver ferrule was still in place it would make it easier.
I did a brief write up about Digger tobacco which you may find interesting,

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/a-very-short-history-of-players-digger-tobacco-gtimage-heavy
...and this is a good WW2 thread with pix of soldiers smoking pipes,

Here's an exhumed WW1 Australian soldier's pipe,

...but I like yours better.

Thanks for the post, and the two very interesting links. Your article was beautifully crafted, and I love the images created for Digger tobacco… My real work is graphic design.
Do you know where the WW1 Australian pipe was found? Western Front? Gallipoli? Egypt?
I wonder if there are more pipes found on battlefields stories out there? That would be an interesting thread I think...

That pipe was found at Fromelles, France.

http://www.ww1westernfront.gov.au/fromelles/pheasant-wood/exhumed-objects-gallery.php
Seventy kilometres north of the battle of the Somme, which had begun almost three weeks before, the British Expeditionary Force decided to launch another small attack at Fromelles. The aim was to discourage the Germans from withdrawing troops from this area and sending them south to the Somme. Two inexperienced infantry divisions, the Australian 5th and the British 61st, were given the task of capturing the first and second lines of German trenches on a 4500 metre front. They were up against 6th Bavarian Reserve Division which held a strong position with barbed wire and concrete bunkers. One of the men serving in the 6th Bavarian was an Austrian corporal named Adolf Hitler.
There are quite a few war pipes out there and many of them are carved by the soldiers who owned them, there seems to be many examples from the Boer War and American Civil War, moreso than the Great Wars, but they're all very interesting to look at...

...here's a WW1 era example,

Barling pipes are highly collectible and command very high prices amongst collectors, but a pipe such as this would probably not appeal to the usual Barling collector because the pipe has been altered and smoked very hard and it was probably bought for much cheaper than a pristine example despite its provenance of being a battle worn item...

Somewhere in storage in the UK I have a pipe from the Boer war carved with a bunch of stuff on it. The German pipes tend to show up quite often. I suppose as people die off these sort of artifacts come on the market.

Here's an Imperial Two Point pipe made in London, and crudely carved with YPRES 1915. I bought it because my great grandfather, James McCarthy, died there on July 6, 1915.

An excellent collection of S&G ephemera. I wish I had something more pipe-related to share with you… Thanks for posting!

...just came another "beach pipe" and it reminded me of this thread:

It's really neat to see the natural time-erosive sandblasting effect!
