Starting to Get Obsessed

Saddened to hear of Kino's passing today. I first met the man in 2019 when he visited Singapore shortly after I bought my very first Castello, a classic Natural Virgin shape 55. Kino signed my pipe sock and said to 19 year-old me, "you're so young you'll buy many Castello pipes."

Unfortunately for my wallet, Kino was right. But that shape 55 is still one of my most cherished possessions. It has been with me through undergrad, two years of national service in the army, a masters degree, and now two years of law school where it sits above my desk. It is loaded up with Esoterica Pembroke in honor of this wonderful man whose creations have given me many wonderful bowls. To you, Kino; Requiescat in pace.

Franco Coppo died at the age of 83, the one who has carried out the "Pipa Castello" brand in these decades - founded by his father-law Carlo Scotti - a proudly crafted reality of Cantù, a real traditional shop, for a pipe internationally recognized among the best in the world: although in a niche market such as that of smokers, among the great admirers of the Castello there was no shortage of leading characters, such as the president of the Republic Sandro Pertini - who held the "Pipa Castello" in his hands of the world championship won in 82 by Italy - the ct Enzo Bearzot, The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Harold Wilson. He lived in Como, the funeral still to be fixed.
