Oh boy, I've held out almost twenty years but now I really have to break one open. Wooziness, you say? Avoid milk and cookies?

My review:
Summary: strong dark Virginias with a fruity topping, this tobacco is the perfect all-day smoke.
"Royal Yacht" gets a bad rap because of its semi-aromatic fruity topping. Like the one in "University Flake" or even "Erinmore Flake," this fades quickly to the background. The main show is the strong Virginia with less sweetness than one might expect, but instead a rich grain taste like the best oatmeal Grandma ever made. It delivers a consistent flavor and strength which makes "Royal Yacht" an excellent tobacco for hard work or even sailing while wearing an ascot. This blend belongs to legend and a very present enjoyment. One of the best.

I finally got around to cracking open a tin of the newest version of Royal Yacht. Why did I wait so long? I think the rumors must have gotten to my subconscious... This is a tasty blend, and I've promoted it from cob to briar. I've read mixed reviews on the ghosting power of this blend. What should I expect (besides more mixed reviews)?

I think the topping is more moderate than minimal, which at this point, having smoked 2/3s of the tin, I think detracts from the flavor of the VA. But the jury is in yet in.

My opinion for what it is worth is well known on this tobacco - an air biscuit in a tin!
Yeah, I'm starting to accept my position as a tobacco whore. Minus some heavy aromatics: Mixture 79, Captain Black, etc. I don't dislike a large number of blends. I thought I wouldn't enjoy Royal Yacht at all, being a heavy(ish) aromatic... but I dig it.
[sigh] Another Dunhill blend that I have to try and cellar while the cellarin's good.

Not at all. The burley and the mahogany, which last I heard was a burley variant, as in the early releases of Cumberland, make for a tobacco more substantial in taste. The topping on University Flake I found more restrained. I smoked a tin in November, and to my mind the tobacco was lighter in flavor and topping than the last I smoked about 10 years ago.

I've always wondered what the "mahogany" was. The original version of UF used to indicate it on the tins, but the newer version does not. I wonder to what extent it has anything to do with the difference in taste between the two.

I think the tobacco was reblended. I spent smoking it late last year complaining that it had changed and dismissed it. The I read Jim Inks review singing its praises, so if I can let go of the past, I imagine that I will enjoy the next tin more. I've got nine to go.

@unkleyoda. Absolutely! Thats the purpose of forums chum. If we all agreed it would be a very boring world or worse still we might all smoke Royal Yuck! As an after thought I have tasted the various and latest iteration of the stuff and it always seems to change over the years in fairly radical ways in regards to its flavor profile. Some of the things I like others detest and I accept quite a bit of good natured ribbing on my tastes.

Yup! It's part of our personalities to a certain degree; the Cap'n digs Black Frigate, Condorlover1 hates Royal Yacht, I have nightmares regarding Captain Black, and we all seem to choose sides on the Mixture 79 conflict... and a bit of good natured chop bustin' is expected.
In my opinion, people would be less stressed if they tried to chill, and enjoy Life for the running gag it is.

A "running gag" may not be far off the mark:
