RIP Gordon Lightfoot

I remember reading that he wrote The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald from an article he read while having coffee one morning.. Amazing.

Some interesting changes to the live version, he did make a few changes as the investigations changed, somethings he just didn't have the right jargon, and one was "in a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed..." someone from that church was upset and told him it was not a "musty old hall" so when he sang it live one of the changes was "in a rustic old hall in Detroit they prayed.."

I was a kid, probably 11 or 12, when I saw Gordon Lightfoot as the opening act for Peter, Paul & Mary. All these years, a scores of concerts later, I still have a vivid memory of his performance. I remember being especially struck be "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" and the piece retains its beauty and power still. So many great songs, too many to list but "Affair on 8th Avenue" and "Beautiful" come to mind this morning. Right there with fellow Canadians L. Cohen. Joanie, Neil and the Band. What a voice....

I have childhood memories listening to Gordon, back of my legs sticking to the pleather Volvo seats, riding down the road with mom. Getting older is heart breaking sometimes. We’re losing so many great artists. RIP Gordon

Lightfoot was smart to stay rooted in Toronto. He still toured on into later years, mostly in Canada I think, but he had a home place.

He was a true legend, one of the last great singer-songwriters in my opinion. If you get a chance to see the documentary "Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind," it's well worth seeing. I think it's on Prime. He was the only songwriter in my opinion who could create a whole tapestry of imagery in literally one line of lyrics. Just unbelievable. RIP Gordie.

One of the greatest songwriters of our time.
One of my favorite albums was this Tony Rice tribute to Gordon. I think it captivates his songwriting in a magical way.

His music will live on.
