Hey all,

Spent the morning doing some preliminary restoration work on a few beauties.

First, a Charatan’s Make Distinction Deluxe Extra Large Freehand, then a 1962 Pipe Dan Gert Holbek Black Sandblasted Polonius (3 asterisk), and finally a Comoy’s Patent Grand Slam 109 with stinger.

It was a fun morning, can’t wait to smoke these, especially the Charatan’s and Holbek.

Very nice shapes!

The rim on that first one looks great.

Yes, and pristine.

That second shape tweaks me though. It makes me want to grab a sanding block and get rid of that thick area where the shank joins the bowl. Like they were going for Dublin and got lazy and didn’t finish sanding.

A great way to spend a Saturday morning. They look nice.

On a side note, I'm diggin' the old typewriter. We have an old typewriter that our grandson likes to play with.

Having been born in 1962 I’m trying to have an affinity with it. I think I’m getting there. I’d really need to hold it in my hand, maybe smoke it to know...jk, my first reaction was the same but I’ve really come around to like the uniqueness.

The polonius shape came out of Pipe-Dan’s (and possibly Denmark’s) craziest, coolest, and most unique era IMO. At the time the Pipe-Dan catalog included pipes made by Sixten Ivarsson, Sven Knudsen, Gert Holbek, and more. And there were some, to say the least, wild and unique shapes.

The Polonius is actually one of the more conservative ones, if you can beleive that! Here is the1962 catalog, I strongly suggest a perusal, it’s eye opening to say the least. The further in you get, the wilder the shapes become:

Yeah, my wife got me that for Christmas right when we first started dating! It works! Cam with a travel case that she put a nice Bukowski quote on the side of.

Looking good! The Distinction stirs the ugliest sort of envy in me.
Yeah that pipe is SICK! The grain gets me half chubbed and the pipe itself and nomenclature is in great shape and it’s BIG!

That and i got it for $70 On the bay. Ultra score.
