I think you have the right attitude. First, do no harm. It's a sturdy pipe with lots of life left. I don't have any legacy pipes, but a nice ten-pipe round rack with amber tobacco bowl, now in its third generation.

I've seen a few of your cleanups and I hardly think you will destroy the pipe.

You know what to do, light touch and take your time. I think that pipe looks fairly clean to begin with. I say go for it!
I agree with Mike. This doesn’t look more difficult than some of the restorations you have done. Proceed with caution and I am sure you will achieve nice results. Looks like this one is in your wheel-house. Looking forward to seeing the after pictures.

It's quite doable with tools you have at handy in your home. Just try to be careful .. pour the alcohol over the salt with a pipette, use spit or lemon juice on the rim, try oxy clean on the stem, and perhaps buffing it a bit with carnauba wax, and there you go, you will have a lovely pipe !

Grandpa's pipe has a very nice shape! I have faith you won't effe it up, and if you do well that's what grandkids are for, you should have tried fixing it for him earlier!
I am sure you can at least start the process and if it gets dicey send it out!

Good luck.

I’m happy with how it turned out. I’ve had a lot of other stuff going on so I haven’t had a lot of time. I didn’t “restore” this one as much as preserve. I kept the teeth chatter in the stem because it was grandpa’s. I also kept the marks on the rim because they were from his use. I cleaned it but didn’t eliminate the ghost. It smells nice and reminds me of him. I also sent his zippo off for repairs at the factory and put the new pipe insert in it.

Thanks for the encouragement to do this.

A beautiful sympathetic restoration! I like to restore old tools. I enjoy restoring something to a servicable state while maintaining some of its "history". I hope you'll occasionally enjoy a bowl of your grandpa's favorite tobacco in it.
