Restaining A Pipe

Under what circumstances do you decide to restain a pipe?
I am restaining an old Amphora due to ugly burn marks. I have done a black coat then sanding. Tomorrow I will do a medium brown coat and probably be done.

I have a pipe is be restained purely as a skills building challenge.

I don't think i would do it to a new pipe though.

only if it needs it.. otherwise I try not.
