Well I don’t own any Barlings so I was able to pick up this one on EBay . It needed some work and bad pictures kept the price fantastic. This thread is picture heavy. I started out cleaning, retort, reaming, etc. 147FA6C0-796F-4056-93E7-63A533FF369F.jpeg. The stem needed some work Tooth marks and the button was in not the best shape. I fixed all those issues as best I could.9F25CAAF-9622-48CE-8600-E2143BD6C648.jpeg97A4D9DA-02D7-4C17-B0DC-E66ED5FFAA18.jpegD3D8A800-4B78-4CE6-B972-3539896BEE07.jpeg410B8501-1EA4-44F0-8EAA-5D5C069CFAEE.jpegB386E2B7-2410-4B21-8F08-0396768A0B97.jpeg97E9BF62-1B03-4847-89DC-4495EB631C30.jpeg. Next I was pretty happy then I dropped the stem and the Tendon stapped off. This is the original stem so I want to keep it that way. I contacted Walker pipe and he will be replacing the tendon. 461B67AC-F1AC-4CED-B0F8-D07C6D731C06.jpeg102987F5-21C1-4682-B6A5-6DDF9B1EDCE3.jpeg350B532A-1774-4D38-B316-CD19C89C0404.jpeg

Oh, nice old broad bowled pot, and the briar looks in fine condition. I think you are on your way to putting all this behind you. But the setbacks are frustrating, or would be to me.

Sad would have been the bowl was chewed up by the dog...Look on the bright side, a new stem on a fine old Barling!

I've done the same sort of, brole a tenon on a Barling's Special with a to aggressive twist off. A Barling's Pot shape, you can't go wrong!

@sablebrush52 I know this is a pretransition /family era pipe. The nomenclature is strong. However there is no Patent date or Barlings design on the under side of shank or any where? I looked with a jewelry loop. It’s not faded it’s just not there. What does that mean? I know by the 4 digit number starting with1 it’s for sale in America. But that’s about it. I figured because of the bigger arch it would be later after ww2. Any help I’d love.

It's a post WW2 Barling, most likely made sometime between 1947 and 1955, based on the nomenclature. After 1955 Barling changed the logo to a higher arch, almost hemispherical. This particular Barlings Make logo was used in the 1930's, '40's and 50's. The TVF stamp really didn't see much, if any, use prior to the war. You're correct about the four digit stamp representing a pipe made for the British market.

But just to muddy things up a little, not all British market model stamps were four digits. Some of the older model numbers were not changed when Barling redid their numbering system in the mid 1920's. Some of these old numbers remained consistent right through to the relaunch of the Barling line up in November of 1962.
