Rant About Buying Online

Not so much a rant, but a wish to have another option when paying online. I believe that in 2021 we should have the option of spreading around the total payment to several different sources.

At the checkout, we should be able to split the total between a PayPal balance, and a credit card at least. Does that make the process to complex for vendor websites?

Am I way off base here or is this a decent idea?

Yeah, I think it gets complicated to process. With PayPal I just transfer any balance to my bank account and pay with credit card whenever possible because I can get points. Then I pay off my full balance.

Speaking as a retired IT professional, it would be a huge processing headache.

Why couldn’t you just use one form of payment?

a gift card is usually applied as a coupon

Yes. Gift cards don’t fail or get clawed back.

Whats the payoff? Sounds like it’s a problem because PayPal sucks to get money out of.

There are reasons to do this. I've wondered the same thing myself. Often, it comes down to minimizing the credit portion of a purchase with cash on hand.

Maybe it's just the vendor you're purchasing from.

I have purchased items from vendors where I've paid with my Paypal balance and then paid the remaining balance with a credit card.

There are reasons to do this. I've wondered the same thing myself. Often, it comes down to minimizing the credit portion of a purchase with cash on hand.

Buy with credit card. Immediately put cash down on the credit card. Same effect.

You can control some of this yourself, for example have you Paypal draw from the account that you want used, then it uses the funds in the paypal acct, and the remainder is drawn from the other acct.

Sometimes the retailers can't even get the orders right, or the packing, so asking them to juggle two or three pay methods is probably a bridge too far. I don't think we'd like the results.

If you set up your PayPal account to use multiple payment sources, it will do that for you.
