Hello all,
I have a dear friend who has been a chain smoker for years. Will Five Brothers have enough nic in a good sized bowl to satisfy his constant need for My Lady N? I've introduced him to pipes, and am looking for a blend that might help him transition.

Thanks for your feedback!

I would think so, but the N absorption from a pipe is so much slower that he may need to get used to not having the N "kick in the face" from the cigs. I'd wager that a large bowl of 5 Brothers will have a lot more N actually absorbed into his system than a couple cigs. It'll just be slower.

probably not cause it's not really the nic levels that they really need to adjust as much as the getting that much nicotine in their system really quickly. So there is not a pipe tobacco that is the magic bullet all it can do is make the transition easier. It is still going to require your friends to wean themselves. If anything snus is probably a better option for a chain smoker. Since it's a lot easier to keep a fresh snus in ones lip then to smoke a pipe all day. Which is the other thing if they chain smoke they probably want a constant stream of nicotine. So it could help but it isn't a magic bullet.

Yeah, Five Brothers has substantial nicotine, so it might help. However, if he is going to properly smoke a pipe, he'll have to learn not to inhale for the nicotine, which might cut down on his dose. If he can accept that adaptation, it might help. Also, Five Brothers can be added to other lower nic blends as a booster, if he wants to branch out and adjust to lower nic blends. It's worth a try. Old Joe Krantz original is another higher nic blend, if he wants variety.

I really appreciate all y'alls comments. He's an OTR trucker with his own truck, so I'm pretty sure he'll be able to smoke all day long if he wishes, (well, he already does, lol).
I think your points are pretty sensible Mikefu and Anotherbob, for him to actually quit he'll still need to put in the work.
Mso489, I didn't even think of using Five Brothers or OJK as boosters, that's pretty brilliant!

I quit cigs(1-1/12 packs a day habit) with 5 brothers and OJK. OJK still gives me hiccups. Just let him know that he’s not going to get that huge smash of nicotine right off the bat with the pipe, but that once he’s used to the slower absorption rate, the satisfaction lasts longer. Eventually, at least in my experience and after a few months, the nicotine craving becomes less as you adjust until it becomes just a happy side-effect.

Not much to add to what's already been said here. 5 Brothers is a fairly strong shag cut that burns well and can pack a nice nic hit for pipe tobacco which is not nearly as strong as cigarettes due to the pipe not being inhaled perhaps. 5 bros is a inexpensive choice to experiment with and see if he enjoys smoking a pipe or not.

There's nowhere near the nicotine satisfaction from Five Brothers or any other pipe tobacco that I've smoked that compares to cigarettes. Giving them up for a pipe is something your friend is going to have to make a conscious effort to do.

I second this. Those were my two go-to blends when quitting the cigs. I still like them now, in fact.

I made the switch about 18 months ago and Five Brothers is probably not what I would choose primarily, though it may be a good option in certain situations. It has a reasonably high nicotine level, but well short of other, more interesting blends. It takes time for the nicotine to absorb via the pipe and Five Brothers burns so quickly. That can be an advantage in short break situations, but otherwise might lead to a lack of satisfaction.

The one that really helped me was Gawith, Hogarth & Co. Dark Flake. Also, Brown Twist, 1792, Lakeland Dark, etc. If those are unavailable, I also relied on HH Bold Kentucky and GL Pease JackKnife Plug. In addition to the amped up strength, these blends are also quite tasty and I think would lead to a more satisfying experience, overall.

I also used Swedish Snus as a backup for when smoking a bowl was impossible, but I needed a quick fix. Eventually, my nicotine addiction settled down to the point where I didn't need it, but in the beginning, the snus was an important part of setting myself up for success, so that I didn't run to the cigarettes when in a pinch.

Good luck to your friend. I am so glad I made the switch!
