Yes. I always think, when I hear the term "engineering" in reference to a pipe, or pipe maker, that the fit of the tenon and absence of any spaces in the path of the smoke is part of that. But, of course, Army Mount pipes kind of blow a hole in that thinking (no pun intended). Or, take Falcons, which have a spiral tube between the bowl and the bit.
I do know that Savinelli pipes that are set up for a filter do not work at all for me because of the turbulence that is created in that void where the filter goes. I just can't get a good smoke out of one -- filter or not.
Seems like a lot of pipe makers get past this by putting the tenon in the other direction, up into the stem. Scottie Piersel does this and her pipes smoke great.
