I was wondering could the stem tenon which is not long enough to reach the very end in the mortise result in gurgling/wet smoking pipe ? I mean if there is a gap in the mortise between the tip of the tenon and where the drafthole drill starts in the shank?

I am not sure, but I also have the impression, that the described phenomenon is a possible cause for gurgling. I mean, shouldn't it be a simple equasion: more surface = more condensation?

But all in all, this is a very interesting question, that I am asking myself / thinking about frequently.

Yes. I always think, when I hear the term "engineering" in reference to a pipe, or pipe maker, that the fit of the tenon and absence of any spaces in the path of the smoke is part of that. But, of course, Army Mount pipes kind of blow a hole in that thinking (no pun intended). Or, take Falcons, which have a spiral tube between the bowl and the bit.

I do know that Savinelli pipes that are set up for a filter do not work at all for me because of the turbulence that is created in that void where the filter goes. I just can't get a good smoke out of one -- filter or not.

Seems like a lot of pipe makers get past this by putting the tenon in the other direction, up into the stem. Scottie Piersel does this and her pipes smoke great.

Since I've mostly given up straight pipes for 1/4 bents, I've not had a gurgle regardless of a camfered or flat end tenon.

I find it odd that so many people love and recommend Savinelli pipes yet dog on other pipemakers. I have found the same thing with their smoking qualities... and I don’t like a tongue depressor taste to my tobacco from the wood filter.

There's almost always a little room between the end of the tenon and the end of the mortise to allow for some expansion and contraction bue to temperature and humidity changes.
My experience with gurgling is that it happens when the tobacco I'm smoking has too much moisture in it. I'm a very slow smoker, so, at least in my instance, cadence doesn't play a factor.
