I just received a beautiful Peterson D17 churchwarden pipe from my loving wife and it came with several pipe cleaners of proper length to clean the stem. My question is if it is possible to clean the stem with normal BJ long tapered pipe cleaners (my cleaner of choice) or do I need to buy the special length cleaners from Peterson?

I say that if you can get a pipe cleaner over half way through you can use that length just put one end of the cleaner through each end of the stem. For this to work you have to take the stem off. Though just buy the longer cleaners. And if you're a cheap bastard the longer ones can be cut in half to make regular size cleaners just be careful because sometimes the cut end can be super sharp and no need to damage a pipe :).
