When I first started to smoke a pipe over 10 years ago, I didn't have a mentor and relied on online forums and videos. All this time I had figured out that there were two ways to puff a pipe, sipping it by applying a little pressure on the pipe drawing the smoke in and the passive breath method. Lately I've noticed on videos that there is at least a third way, at least it looks like that to me. The third way is to inhale through your nose, causing a negative pressure in your mouth and so drawing on the pipe. I tried it and it seems to work fairly well. I get great taste of the tobacco as well as my pipe doesn't seem to heat up as badly as it does with the sipping method. Does anyone on here use this method or am I misunderstanding what I'm seeing.

It’s called the “breath” method, or something like that. It’s what I mostly do naturally, though I also sip. These days, everything is a method.

I am a clencher, and breathing normally through my nose is all the pressure I need to keep my pipe going.
I do have to puff a bit when lighting my pipe, but after it's going... I just breath normally until it's all white ash.
Yup when I clench, it opens up a grand airway tunnel, keeping everything going without even having to think about it.

Just tried the breathing through the nose method, but it isn't working for me - I can't see or feel any smoke in my mouth.

I can use the breath method, but find it to be too wet. So I just sip lightly.

I think the inhaling through the nose is one and the same as the breath method. But since you think it is distinct, can you describe the difference between those two as you see it?

You are right, I didn't really explain it as well as I should. To me the breath method is an almost passive way to smoke a pipe. You simply breath and that does all the work. The way I was asking about is more intentional, and instead of just simply breathing, you "snort" or "sniff" air through your nose. You might look at it as a turbo charged breath method. I hope that makes more sense. I first noticed it watching Marks videos on his You Tube channel St. Mark's Pipes.

I think I do all of the above during the course of one pipe. I call it the trying to relax, but distracted, ADHD, keep it lit method.
